The evolution of the developer recruitment market

The slowdown in scale-up recruitment

The question of the slowdown in Tech recruitment is often asked by clients and candidates in interviews. Compared to 2021, the drop in recruitment volumes in the IT sectors mainly concerns job offers in scale-up and within the French Unicorns group.

Indeed, it is the financing of fundraising in Series A, Series B or Series C which has been significantly reduced in two years. The impact has been drastic on scale-up developer teams:

  • Almost complete halt to developer recruitment (especially junior positions)
  • For some, economic layoffs of part of the technical teams

Developer positions that remain in short supply

The market, which was very tense regarding the recruitment of developers, was thus able to benefit from a certain relaxation. However, recruiting a developer remains tense:

  • The diversity of technologies, programming languages and frameworks accentuate the differences between dev profiles
  • The desire to return to a face-to-face culture (with partial teleworking and not full remote) reduces the possibilities for companies

ESNs and large groups continue to have difficulties in recruiting developers, which contributes to continuing to tighten the market for devs in start-ups and scale-ups as well.

A search that focuses on recruiting more senior developer profiles

However, we are observing an evolution in the demands of corporate clients of the Licorne Society recruitment service. In fact, fewer and fewer startups and scale-ups are asking us to recruit junior developer profiles. This is explained by two main reasons:

  • Companies are increasingly looking to reduce technical team costs, by recruiting a smaller team of experienced developers rather than a large number of junior developers
  • Companies find it easier to recruit junior developers, due to the drop in demand for young graduates leaving school
